International Women’s Day 2022 – #breakthebias

On #IWD22 International Women’s Day, we are celebrating the culmination of some brilliant, compassionate, and stretching thinking from two of our brilliant Associates – Professor Ellie Highwood and Diksha Chakravarti, with some beautiful artwork designed by my 13 year old niece, Miss Amy Cooper.

“International Women’s Day is a day to highlight the need to continue to drive for women’s equality close to home and across the globe, and to celebrate women’s achievements. The 2022 theme  of International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias – a reminder that there are still many biases (or limiting assumptions) about women. You might hear these as “that’s a man’s job” or “run like a girl”. Ways to #BreakTheBias include talking about it to raise awareness, taking action to remove bias from  working practices, and providing counter-examples – women who have ignored or battled those biases and assumptions to do what they wanted to do. Every time we challenge an assumption or a bias about women, however small, we take a step towards a gender equal world.”

Women continue to treated as the underclass and suffer hugely from societal imbalances – official figures have revealed that during the Pandemic, women experienced more stress and anxiety due to the unreasonable pressures they were put under and the incidence of domestic abuse also escalated.  This is a sad indictment on society, which needs to change and change fast.  So having an IWD allows women the opportunity to express solidarity and stand shoulder to shoulder in support of each other: here is  my favourite quote from very young woman of International fame:

I raise up my voice—not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. … We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back. Malala Yousafzai

Today’s world is obscure and brutal for many people from many walks of life, and so make no mistake that by us showing support for #IWD22, this dwarfs the importance of the array of challenges faced by many. Our support does however, present a chance for us to have some conversations we might not otherwise have – to lift-up the women in our lives, and celebrate their successes. To all of us who are one, have been one, are transitioning to become one, have loved and cared or loved one, are a friend to, are parented by or are a parent to, have been taught by, mentored or managed by a woman – congratulations. You are making a difference to our world – keep going and believe. However hard it may sometimes seem, #breakthebias is vitally important, ongoing work.
